Accepting New Clients: Yes

Born and raised in the heart of Himalayas, I bring a culturally grounded, compassionate approach to therapy. I believe there is no single path to healing—each person's journey is unique. My eclectic, trauma-informed practice is shaped by both lived experience and clinical training, and I hold space for clients navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, and life transitions. I offer therapy in Hindi and Nepali.

As a cancer survivor, mindfulness and spirituality are integral to my life and practice. I support individuals and youth using evidence-based approaches including Internal Family Systems (IFS), DBT, CBT, EFFT, and Narrative Therapy, grounded in anti-oppressive and anti-racist principles. My eclectic, trauma-informed practice is shaped by over two decades of experience as a social worker in Canada and more than a decade of work with marginalized communities in the Global South. I currently work as an educator in the School of Social Work at McMaster University.

At the heart of my work is the therapeutic relationship—a sacred space for healing, growth, and transformation. My Approach Includes:

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT)
  • Narrative Therapy
  • Anti-Oppression & Anti-Racism Frameworks
  • Crisis De-escalation & Suicide Prevention

Areas of Support: I primarily support individuals and youth experiencing:

  •  Anxiety and depression
  • Trauma and complex trauma
  • Substance misuse
  •  Relationship challenges
  • Life transitions and feeling stuck
  • ·Internal conflict and emotional overwhelm

Nirja Thakkar (she/her)

Accepting New Clients: Yes
Nirja is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She believes you don't need to be in crisis to deserve support. Sometimes, therapy begins with feeling stuck in the same patterns, struggling to find motivation, or wondering why things that seem simple for others feel so difficult for you.
Nirja has a particular interest in working with ADHD, OCD, anxiety, relationships, family dynamics, and complex trauma. She understands how difficulties with everyday tasks, follow-through, and emotional regulation can become tangled with shame, self-criticism, and a loss of trust in yourself. Perhaps a ten-minute chore feels like a four-hour commitment, you struggle to follow through on things that matter to you, or you find yourself caught between wanting to do better and feeling unable to get started. Together, therapy can become a space to understand these patterns without judgment and explore what might help.
Her approach is warm, curious, and relational. Grounded primarily in psychodynamic therapy, Nirja seeks to understand how past experiences and relationships shape the ways we see ourselves and connect with others. She integrates IFS-informed parts work, somatic approaches, CBT, DBT, ACT, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and the Gottman Method to meet each client's needs. She also draws on her experience supporting neurodivergent individuals and their families, including caregivers navigating guilt and burnout.
Nirja welcomes individuals aged 15 and older, couples, and families, and is committed to creating an affirming, inclusive space for people from diverse backgrounds, including 2SLGBTQIA+, BIPOC, and disabled communities. She also works with clients navigating perinatal mental health concerns, life transitions, and other challenges. Therapy is available in English, Hindi, and Gujarati. Online therapy and in person therapy in Ancaster, with sliding-scale options available when applicable.

Nirja has training and experience using the following modalities in her practice:

  • Psychodynamic Therapy
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
  • Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
